KELLY COVINGTON (Raw Silk’s Lead Female Vocalist)
Kelly Covington is a talented vocalist with a pure, powerful voice that makes a soaring lead instrument. She evokes the complete spectrum of emotions during the course of an evening's performance.
Her four-octave range and finely developed technical skills, combined with her depth and sensitivity in interpretation of lyrics, enable her to make a wide range of material seem as if they were written for her.
Originally from New York, Covington's inspiration to dedicate herself to music came from her father, a pianist and vocalist whose group, "The Glen Covington Trio," performed in the New York City area.
After studying music at Fiske University in Nashville, Tennessee, and touring with the "Jubilee Singers", Covington moved to San Francisco.
She did studio work in the Bay area, performing on Angela Bofill and Phyllis Hyman's albums, and other albums produced by Narada Michael Walden (winner of a Grammy award for Best Producer).
After moving to Maui 10 years ago, she has continued to do studio work here, as well as performing live with a variety of bands at numerous clubs and hotels.
Covington has been writing original songs as well, recently with Walden in writing, "I'm Down for You", recorded by Stacy Lattisaw.
She sang on several albums recorded on Maui, including Mango's "Mango Season," Michael Stillwater's "Heart songs," and "Just Visiting," by David Stinson.
She is currently performing with her own group "Raw Silk", which performs a wide range of musical styles including jazz, pop, R&B, rock & roll and the finest in dance music.
